Chief Master Sergeant Michael G. Sullivan was the Air Education and Training Command Career Field Functional Manager for the Information Management Career Field, May 1996 - March 2000. He performed these duties at the Directorate of Communications and Information, Mission Systems Division, Systems Operations Branch, Headquarters Air Education and Training Command, Randolph AFB, Texas.

Chief Sullivan was born in St. Louis, Missouri on May 11, 1950. He graduated from Mercy High School, University City, Missouri in 1968 and attended Forest Park Community College from 1968 to 1969. He entered the Air Force in 1970 and was assigned to the 1001st Transportation Squadron at Andrews AFB, Maryland. After six months at Andrews, he was reassigned to the 48th Field Maintenance Squadron at Royal Air Force Lakenheath, United Kingdom. After completing this tour, he was assigned a one-year tour at Mather AFB, California in 1974.

Here he became the NCOIC of Operations at the 353d Electronic Warfare Officers Training School. Relocating overseas in 1975, he was assigned as Detachment Administration Supervisor for the Space and Missile Test Center, Operating Location Alpha on Canton Island of the Phoenix Islands Group in the South Pacific.

From 1976 - 1980, he was assigned to the 52d Tactical Fighter Wing Command Post, Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany. This tour began a series of assignments within Europe that started with the Electronic Security Command, Tempelhof Central Airport, West Berlin, Germany.

While in West Berlin, he served as NCOIC of the 6912th Electronic Security Group Command Section. He performed executive officer duties for the Commander, Deputy Commander, and Senior Enlisted Advisor.

In 1983, Chief Sullivan was reassigned to Ramstein Air Base, Germany where he served 13 years of his military career. He began his tour as Chief of Administration with 23d Air Force Detachment 1, Air Rescue and Special Operations. He also performed additional duty as Squadron First Sergeant and NCOIC of Deployment Support.

In 1989, he moved to Headquarters United States Air Forces in Europe as the Directorate Superintendent of Operational Plans Administration Division.

In 1990, he left the Directorate of Plans for appointment as the Executive Officer to the Commander of the 512th Fighter Squadron (Dragons).

In 1992, he returned to HQ USAFE initially as Superintendent of Information Management for the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, and subsequently as Executive NCO, Directorate of Operations, Plans, and Intelligence.

During this time, Chief Sullivan was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for assisting the Office of Special Investigations in a sensitive and covert counter-intelligence operation, involving significant risk to personal safety. His performance was instrumental in the identification and arrest of several senior level agents of the Foreign Intelligence Service, who were caught committing espionage against the United States and members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). His commitment and devotion to duty resulted in completion of one of the most significant counter-intelligence operations in United States Air Force history. His dedication to "service before self" helped neutralize the hostile espionage threat in Europe.

Leaving HQ USAFE for the last time in May 1994, he became the Group Superintendent for Information Management and Superintendent of Plans, Readiness, and Deployment Support for the 32d Air Operations Group. He left Ramstein AB, Germany in 1996 and assumed position as MAJCOM Information Management Functional Manager at HQ AETC at Randolph AFB, Texas.

Chief Sullivan has earned his Community College of the Air Force Associates Degree in Information Management. He attended the Strategic Air Command Noncommissioned Officer Leadership School, the Electronic Security Command Noncommissioned Officer Academy, and the United States Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy.
